CAPSULS™

PORTABLE MEDICAL ISOLATION UNIT

(ISOVAC LLC Registered Trademark)
Containment And Protection System Utilizing Life Support

The 2K10PIU-PN model is a versatile and economic, portable medical isolation unit (PMIU).
The system includes a flexible, pressurisable shell that can be configured in either positive or negative pressure mode. Positive pressure isolates and protects a vulnerable patient (e.g. an immunosuppressed patient) during transport operations, mitigating the risks of exposure to infectious agents and/or contaminants. Negative pressure isolates the contaminated patient minimising the risk of infecting operators during transport operations.

The 2K10PIU-PNmodel has a unidirectional, filtered air recirculation system for patient life support, as well as special features that allow treating the patient using medical equipment.

Main uses of the 2K10PIU-PN1 model

Isolated transport of patients by helicopter, airplane, ambulance, boat or any vehicle capable of safely transporting the patient on standard stretchers. Temporary isolation in hospitals or other healthcare facilities, including during the diagnostic phase.

CAPSULS™ is a regulatory Class II device. t has been cleared by the FDA for marketing in the United States.
CAPSULS™ is covered by US and European patents.

SPECIFICATIONS

The 2K10PIUPN model isolates and protects the patient when the shell is sealed and maintained at a positive pressure (high pressure) when compared to the external environment by means of an air blower at the end.

The 2K10PIU-PN unit secures and isolates the infected patient when the casing is sealed up and kept at negative pressure (low pressure) of environmental air, using an air-bleeding pipe at one end.
MUST BE USED IN CONJUNCTION WITH A STRETCHER TO WORK AT NEGATIVE PRESSURE.

The airflow gets in through one end to the head of the PIU and flows out through the feet. A battery-operated ventilator at a rate of 115 litres/minute provides 17 to 21 air changes per hour. The average life of the batteries (type-D alkaline batteries) is approximately 4 hours.
The life of the ventilator batteries (BA5800-U standard rechargeable batteries) is 7 to 10 hours.

When the PIU works at positive pressure, the primary filters filter any potential pathogens or contaminants out of the inflow, providing the patient with purified air. When the PIU works at negative pressure, the filters remove any patient-generated contaminants. The filters are NBCR-classified, which means they meet high filtering standards (compliant with HE/P100 standard, 99.97%, @0.3μ).

HE/P100 filters are fitted in all the points that come in contact with the external environment as well as on all the “gates” that are not connected to the ventilator, thus preventing the so-called reverse flow of contaminants.

ISOVAC’s Iso-Shell ™ is made of a specially developed plastic film. Along with the Iso-Weld™ welding system, it forms a strong barrier against biological and radioactive particles. Redundancy of the safety device is guaranteed by the negative pressure of the casing.

ISOVAC has developed such technology by blending different materials together into a casing that is 100% water- and gas-proof.

The zipper closure of the (PIU) CAPSULS™ provides insulation from gases and fluids and passes 100% of the manufacturer’s pressure tests. The zipper closure is secured to the casing by the Iso-Weld™ technology.

The CAPSULS™ system features 3 belts so it can be secured to standard stretchers and provide a steady platform to lift and carry the patient around, without stressing the casing, as well as letting the PIU work at negative pressure. The belts are essential to carry the patient on most health vehicles (fastened to standard stretchers in ambulances, helicopters, airplanes or boats), making the system adaptable to the existing vehicles without having to alter them.

Using the CAPSULS™ system, the patient can be rescued by experienced, well-trained staff in under 15 minutes (from pulling out and assembling the package to “wrapping in” the patient).

The “suitcase” opening method of the CAPSULS™ system allows easy access to the stretcher for easy lowering of the patient onto the stretcher and equally easy securing of the patient to the PMIU plane.

The patient and what is around him can be visually monitored through the see-through casing.

The CAPSULS™ system incorporates a versatile patient-fastening system inside the casing. Multiple leg, wrist, waist and chest belts. The number and layout of the fastening belts may be changed and adapted to the patient’s anatomy and injuries.

In its standard configuration, the CAPSULS™ 2K10PIU- PN unit is provided with 4 gloved doors that make it easier to treat the patient and move him around for the advanced stabilisation of the airways, for infusion, or for advanced resuscitation.

The CAPSULS™ has ports (on the sides of the head) which the tubes of the medical equipment or the pipes of other devices can be threaded into.

The life and resistance to abrasion/piercing of its materials are 10 times better than those of equally-thick standard PVC materials. The top of the casing is made of a reinforced material that protects the CAPSULS™ and makes it last longer. It also provides the spots where the fastening belts can be anchored to.

The CAPSULS™ system can be used in any temperature range insofar as compatible with human life (-40°C to +60°C).

The materials used to make the CAPSULS™ (non-absorbent surfaces with no pockets and/or dips) prevent any contaminants or decontaminants from seeping in. Any known contaminant has its own decontamination procedure, approved by the local health authorities.

Primary control of the patient’s secretions is provided by adult diapers or bed pads, placed underneath the patient. The biocontainment unit keeps the patient isolated at all times.

Accessories include: user manual, ventilator test/tube, waterproof patient ID sheet, and carry bag.

The CAPSULS™ and all its parts come in a practical carry bag.
